- Het 600.Squadron [AAF] was gestationeerd op het grote militaire vliegveld Manston in Kent, tegenwoordig nog steeds een vliegveld. Het squadron was uitgerust met de lange afstandjagers van het type Blenheim 1.F, dat zes .303 mitrailleurs als bewapening had, maar dat voor de jachtrol volledig ongeschikt was door zijn kwetsbaarheid en traagheid. In de ochtend van 10 mei kreeg het squadron opdracht Duitse vliegtuigen aan te vallen bij Rotterdam. Alleen B-Flight - met zes toestellen - voert uiteindelijk de opdracht uit en geraakt rond 1130 uur (Nederlandse tijd) boven de Nederlandse kust. Terwijl de zes toestellen de Waterweg volgen richting Waalhaven worden ze door Duitse Bf-109 en Bf-110 jachttoestellen onderschept. Vijf van de zes toestellen werden daarbij neergeschoten. Zeven RAF vliegers kwamen daarbij om, n werd krijgsgevangen, drie man ontsnapten met RN schepen [alleen S/L Wells had drie man aan boord, de andere toestellen slechts twee].
- F/O Hugh Rowe en P/O Echlin vlogen met hun Blenheim ten zuiden van IJsselmonde en kwamen daar in een luchtgevecht met een Bf-110, waarbij de Blenheim een motor in brand geschoten zag, terwijl de Air Gunner P/O Echlin door het Duitse vuur achter de mitrailleur sneuvelde. Bij Piershil werd het toestel met een buiklanding aan de grond gezet, waarna de piloot Rowe door Nederlandse geniesoldaten uit het wrak werd getrokken. De Air Gunner verbrandde met het toestel. De gewonde F/O Rowe werd in Oud-Beijerland opgenomen en werd na drie maanden als krijgsgevangene naar Duitsland afgevoerd. Dat P/O Echlin als Air-Gunner functioneerde is opvallend. Een officier in die functie was zeldzaam. Hij zal vermoedelijk een vervanger zijn geweest.
- 600.Squadron [AAF] was stationed on the large AFB Manston in Kent, nowadays still in use as an airfield. The squadron was equipped with the poorly performing Blenheim 1.F, a twin engine fighter fitted with six .303 machine-guns. It was totally inapt for the fighter-role that it bore, because the airframe was extremely vulnerable, the plane poorly manoeuvrable and above all painfully slow. In the morning of May 10th, 1940, the squadron was instructed to give ground support to the British commando parties around Pernis and in doing so sweeping the German landed airplanes on Waalhaven. In the end only B-flight managed to reach the opposite site of the Northsea around 1130 hrs (Dutch time). It was immediately intercepted by a swarm of Bf-109 and Bf-110 fighters of the Luftwaffe, that were at that time packing the skies around disputed Rotterdam. Within minutes five of the six Blenheim fighters were picked out of the sky, with only one Blenheim barely escaping notwithstandig severe damages sustained. Seven RAF aircrew perished, one was captured by the Germans and three eventually returned with RN ships [only S/L Wells flew with a crew of three, the others with just two].
- F/O Rowe and P/O Echlin flew their Blenheim south of the island IJsselmonde, when they were intercepted by a Bf-110. During the air-battle between the two airplanes one of the Blenheim engines caught fire while navigator/rear gunner Echlin was killed behind the machinegun. The Blenheim made a belly landing near Piershil, where Dutch engineers of a nearby position pulled the unconsious F/O Rowe out of the burning plane. P/O Echlin's body tragically burnt with the wreckage and his remains were later salvaged and burried. F/O Rowe was treated in a military hospital in Oud-Beijerland, where he was dismissed three months later and sent to a German POW camp for the remainder of the war. It is quite remarkable that a P/O acted as an Air-Gunner, but possibly he acted as a last-minute replacement.
